ICC World Twenty20 - UAE 2012
Match 1 - Group C
Sri Lanka v Afghanistan
Live from Sharjah

Lankans lose wickets quickly as Afghans strike back!
After the fielding restrictions were rested, one would have thought both Dilshan and Sangakkara would want to stay in there. Surely that wasn't the case. Sanga was going nuts while Dilshan too was at his devastating best. Ashraf's medium pace is what both the batsmen exploited as they brought up 50 runs partnership for the second wicket.

Afghanistan captain Nowroz Mangal was put under a lot of pressure. He persisted with Ashraf but, it didn't work out. Dilshan and Sanga easily scored off his bowling. Both of them were well set and the spectators seemed to enjoy the entertainment provided by the two Lankans.

In the midst of great batting by the Sri Lankans, it was the off spin of Mohammad Nabi which troubled both of them. Both found it difficult to score off his bowling. Nabi got Sangakkara in his very first over as he deceived him in the flight to knock the stumps. Kumar was frustrated as he was going very well and just a minor lapse in concentration made him pay heavily with his wicket.

After Sangakkara was dismissed it was Chandimal who came in. He kept on ticking the scorecard with Dilshan going well at the other end. It was looking all good till Dilshan was run out after a horrible call by Chandimal for a quick single. Dilshan wasn't off the blocks quickly at first place as he was ran out by the keeper Shahzad. Mathews came in after Dilshan fell but couldn't resist going after Nabi. He was caught by Ashraf. Ashraf got his reward as well finally after Chandimal edged one to keeper Shahzad as Chandimal was going after the bowler.

Now, there are two new batsmen at the crease for Sri Lanka in Mendis and Perera. Surely, they wouldn't want to be in this situation but, Afghanistan bowlers have pulled it back, especially Nabi. So, what will the last 5 overs be like? Join us for the next update!

As I said, Sri Lanka are too vulnerable. Afghan could well bowl them out for 120 odd runs :p

Mathews, Sanga, Dilshan and very talented Chandimal back in the hut. Mendis and Parera can bat a bit. Lets see what score Srilanka manages to post at the end of their innings.

Well well. Two new batsmen out there. Lets see what the Lankans can put up on the board. Hoping their bowlers to get the job done early.

Sri Lanka post a respectable score!
Jeevan Mendis and Thisara Perera were the batsmen who were to face the last 5 overs of Srilankan innings. They knew they were the last recognized batting pair and will have to stay there at the end if Lankans are to make a good score.

Mendis wasn't getting his timing right. He did rotate the strike and kept on ticking the scorecard. Perera was the aggressor of the two. He took on the bowling as the duo added some crucial runs for their team. They scored 41 runs in last 5 overs.

Thisara Perera was the man who took Sri Lanka to the score of 145. He attacked Afghan captain Nowroz Mangal as his 2 overs went for 24 runs. Left hander exploited the third man region to his advantage as he scored most of his runs in that area. It was a mixture of good hitting plus a sensible approach. He along with Jeevan Mendis ensured Sri Lanka did not panic and posted a respectable score. Going for a big one on the last ball of the innings, Perera missed it completely and the ball hit the stumps. Perera was bowled for a well made 28.

Now, Afghanistan need 146 runs to win this match. It isn't a big total but, they will need a good start. Lasith Malinga will be the key. If Afghan batsmen can play out his overs, they might well be in with a great chance to cause an upset! So, stay tuned as we bring you Afghanistan innings on the other side of this update.

A decent effort in the end by the Sri Lankans. No one really kicked on after the starts by the captain Dishan and Sangakkara. I am really pleased by the Afghani's performance. Hamid and Zadran were really good first up and Nabi bowled a remarkable spell. Although, I feel that the captain Mangal, should not have bowled those two overs. I feel that by Shenwari bowling darts, it could have reduced the leakage of runs attained by the Sri Lankans at the end.

146 to win looks gettable. I feel the Sri Lankans have made a mistake in not playing the extra spinner, or even Fernando. I feel that the Noor Ali and Shabir Noori will have to take the initiative against Lakmal and Perera, and play Malinga on it's merit as he will only have two overs up-front to bowl. They must also be very wary of Randiv's four overs of spin, aswell as Jeevan Mendis' googlies. I feel if these can be achieved, then i see no doubt as to why Afghanistan can not cause an upset in this opening game.

SHABA AFGHANISTAN! :thumbs

Lankans have labored their way to the 140s. If the Afghan openers utilize the powerplay (score 50 odd runs) then they could even win!

Against Malinga it seems a bit tough to score 50 odd runs in 6 overs :)

That is a safe score now. Afghanistan can't surpass it in my opinion. Mohd. Shahzad will be the key but against Malinga, well it seems highly unlikely that Afghanistan will win.
