RACING The new F1 game from Codies

Yes, it's a different system used in Race due to the lack of "Skip to Sector x" button or the speed by 6x or 30x features.

So this means that all propositions of the race also being 'fake' have been taken away?

I'm still torn. Can you get a wheel on PS3? Do you need one? And are the graphics better on high end PC or PS3?
Also can you edit drivers and teams? Otherwise in 4 races time everything will be out-of-date.

I have to say that, this response from Codies really has showed some maturity (as they should). Whilst the qualifying sessions don't appear to be 'true' to the sense that qualifying isn't actually occuring it seems that a complex system is set up in which the times are calculated to a degree of accuracy. I think this completely takes out the idea of it being 'fake' to the extent that people were complaining about.

Does their part about the race AI show that the cars are not just 'dropped' on the track when they come into view and that they do actually race?

That post gives hope for the future - that things will be sorted out in the patch(es).

In terms of wheels, you have two roads to go down, cheap or expensive. Logitech (which is really the only make you should consider) do the DFGT, which is ~?70, I use this, it's a good wheel but the pedals aren't the best. However, if you want good pedals you're looking at G25 or G27, both very good wheels, but come at a price. G25s are about ?160, G27s are ?230 and more.

All three will work on PC or PS3. As for whether you need a wheel, no, but it does make the race gaming experience so much better, and the DFGT is more than good enough for that as a "cheap" wheel.

Graphics are definitely better on the PC, but they have said they're looking in to improving graphics in future patches (yes, they used the plural). I think it's obvious this part of the game had to take a back seat so they could get it out during the season (FIA won't let it be released outside of F1 calendar). Also, because 360 and PC use different graphics languages to PS3, they both have an advantage over it. Then again, I'm happy enough with the PS3 graphics.

I've not seen anything which shows you can edit drivers or teams. This is an FIA thing rather than a Codies thing, protecting IP, etc.

Edit: Also worth saying in the "Shall I buy a wheel" question, is of other racing games on the horizon. DIRT3, rallying/off-roaders, DIRT2 was very enjoyable, particularly on-line with mates. The big one is GT5, which is out in a month. rFactor on the PC is also good, as it's so moddable you can pretty much do anything you want with it. There are historic mods (GT, F1, Tourers) more circuits than you could want, etc. rFactor 2 is out soon as well.

My bro has the logitech i went round his yesterday and it just makes it a whole different game with the right settings....playing with pad after just makes the game feel meh. It's well worth the buy especially with that wheels force feedback really makes you feel like you have to control the car

and it works on PS3 and PC (my bro has it on pc)

This has eased most of my worries which would have been game breakers for me, considering getting the game now actually.

No idea, whether it's doable or not is another matter, whether that then is also legal or not is yet another matter.

I've been watching videos of it, and the idea of getting it is so tempting - especially as a source I have always trusted - PC Gamer - has given it a solid 80%. The things I've heard about PC control options though have made me a bit wary - people have said there are no options to alter sensitivity, deadzones and so on with a gamepad - is that accurate? I find the Xbox 360 pad does the job perfectly well with most racers - GTR2 for example, but I've always found you need to fine tune the settings a bit before you find a setting that doesn't have you in the hedge every twenty seconds. :)

If only Codies could've given us a demo, so we could sample the damn handling and things like that for ourselves!

Rent it.

No gamepad will ever be able to replicate what a wheel does. Seriously, if you want a fun gaming experience, a racing wheel is almost essential with racing games. Yes, they aren't cheap. You can get DFGTs for around ?60, but it makes the game imo.

Agreed.

I played with a wheel for the first time in years and it was just a whole new experience compared to pad which just feels like a brain dead activity (if you can call it that)

part of my next months paycheck is defo going towards a wheel and the game itself

That's fair enough, but I find that a gamepad does the job for me, as long as I can configure the sensitivity - is that possible on the PC version? As for renting it, as I said before, there's nowhere I know about around here that rents PC games and I would get this on PC because there are bound to be mods for it - eventually. ;)

I don't play racers enough to warrant laying out ?60 on a genre specific controller such as a wheel, and it would also be a pain to have to keep removing it when I'm not using it. I've played GTR2 with the gamepad and it's fine - as long as it's one with analogue triggers so you can control the amount you accelerate or brake. :)

Edit: Has anyone here played a console version and PC version? Is the handling and the game overall basically the same? If so, I could rent it on PS3 and then if I liked it, it would be a risk free purchase on PC. :yes

Sounds like a good plan, yes, you should be able to move sensitivity with a gamepad. I'd just have a look around on google for it.
