Both the teams are pretty balanced and in recent times have been tough competitors whenever they have come against each other. I remember how Tom Latham and Ross Taylor pulled the match away from India's grasp when they came to India the last time and how India made full use of their home advantage to bounce back in the series but what is different is that this series will be played in New Zealand where ball swings as good as it does in England to some extent and the slowness in the pitches makes it even difficult to score runs on and we all know India's major strength is their batting especially their top order so the problem starts straight away with India's batting. Yes India did bat well in 2009 tour with Tendulkar scoring a 163 in Christchurch and Sehwag scoring a 60 ball 100 but that Indian batting line-up was a class apart to the one which they have right now. And remember India lost 4-0 the last time they played in New Zealand. But with Brendon McCullum retiring and looking at the unsettled middle order of New Zealand with players coming in and going out I don't see them getting 300+ every match which they did back in 2014. Considering the form and the performance of the Indian team in Australia if they play their potential they can win 3-2 or even 4-1 but if they don't it can be as miserable as 2014 series. This is a cracker of a contest !!!!

The key players for New Zealand would be Kane Williamson, Colin Munro, Martin Guptill, Ross Taylor, Southee and Boult and their spin-twins (Sodhi and Santner)

While for India, it would be their top 3 in batting order and MS Dhoni along with their wrist spinners

Lockie Ferguson who bowls pretty much like Pat Cummins can trouble India with his pace and his back of the length deliveries while the Indian spinners can run through the Kiwi batting line-up big time !!!!

Southee has been bowling terribly in ODIs for the past 3-4 years, it would be nice to see him do ok in this series in the lead-up to the WC since he'll be going despite his poor returns

Ross Taylor is the most important player for New Zealand, can’t believe that you’ve missed him. The only player that’s been better than him in ODIs since the previous World Cup is Virat Kohli himself.

This series could be a real test for us, without Bumrah and the high chances of 300+ scores. If India are to chase such scores down, we would need Dhoni to contribute at a much higher strike rate. The top 3 would also need to bat for an extended period of time instead of throwing their wickets away at crucial moments. Wish we get to see Gill bat in a game or two possibly, although it’s pretty unlikely that he gets in the World Cup squad ahead of Rayudu.

Wonder who would be the keeper for New Zealand, considering that Latham didn’t play versus the Lankans. Also, it looks like they might persist with Nicholls at 5, which means Latham might have to open (thereby no Munro at the top), or else bat at 6. A shame that Neesham is not fit for this series, he seemed to be in good form. Southee also has a pretty average ODI record for someone who is supposed to be one of their main pacers. If their fielding woes in the Lankan series continue though, I can see India winning pretty easily.

He can swing the ball early in the innings so there are high chances that he can run through the top order of Indian team. If he does that New Zealand won't need to worry about the result as mostly they would win if that happens

Just saw the press conference of Kohli. I think he's going with 2 seamers, 2 spinners, 1 all rounder and Jadhav. I don't like it one bit, but what do I know?

Rohit, Dhawan, Kohli, Dhoni, Jadhav, DK/Rayudu, Pandya, Bhuvi, Kuldeep, Bumrah and Chahal. This is Kohli's line.

Rohit, Dhawan, Kohli, Dhoni, DK, Pandya, Jadeja, Bhuvi, Kuldeep, Shami and Bumrah. This is my line.

I dont think we have Pandya (Krunal or Hardik) and Bumrah for ODIs

First ODI is probably going to be:

Rohit
Dhawan
Kohli
Dhoni
Jadhav
Karthik
Jadeja
Bhuvi
Kuldeep/Chahal
Khaleel
Shami

With Rahul and Hardik's world cup participation hanging in the balance, I would like to see Shubhman Gill and Vijay Shankar given at least 2 opportunities.

Gill for DK. Vijay for Jadeja

I predict the series to go 3-2, NZ's way. They are a superb ODI side in all conditions and are highly underrated. We are an extremely overrated side, on the other hand. Dhoni`s innings in Australia were artificially glorified by the Indian media. To be honest, we were chasing 234 in the last game and made heavy weather in the process against a very average Aussie side which is worse than Bangladesh, in my opinion.

I fear the same too, @aditya123 . I somehow feel India is being massively overrated in ODI's, even if Bumrah returns. On paper and form, NZ look stronger than us and it would be a surprise if India win or level (if weather contributes) the series.

Our middle order is definitely a big concern, and there are conflicting opinions on who should bat where.

Just when you have subscription to Willow and Hotstar and you think that should cover you for all cricket, ESPN+ comes out of the box and forces you to pay $5/month to be able to watch this series in USA. This war on streaming rights is such a pain in the arse.

And thats 100 ODI wicket for Shami in his 56th ODI match. Did that in in 56th ODI game and the sixth fastest to reach the fastest 100 wicket milestone.

I feel you brother. I was speaking to my wife the same thing. Its not far that we will be paying per series or per channel. Its absolutely ridiculous. $5 a month and cancel anytime is fine but I have Hotstar which I was forced and Willow... why cant matches be on either one.

On the match.. we have it under control. Jadhav drops Williamson and hope its not a costly miss. Also why did we bring in Raydu for Kartik? Are we experimenting or is something wrong with Kartik? He played a blinder the other day which helped us in winning. Keep persisting

Dhawan second fastest Indian to 5000 runs ... only behind Kohli, and that too by just 4 innings. Well done !!! He is a different player in ODIs

Love his pick up shot on the led side
