India in the West Indies

Well, its important to see how Dhoni and Yuvraj fare in this tour.

They are our important players for the World Cup and they need to get the hang over the conditions here in the West indies.

according to me, the ODI's are the most important this time around. Even if India dont do that well in the tests, its not important to me. They can shift their importance back to test cricket once the World Cup is over. We are playing more ODI's nowadays and the World Cup being in the same country, we need to focus fully on the ODI's.

I agree completely about the ODI's. That should be the main focus for every country from now on.

i disagree. Yes, ODI's are important b/c of WC07 but you cannot take away the test performance of either country. ODI's look into WC, but test matches look beyond that. It takes much more time to stay in a test team than in ODI's and India will need to take time to see their test squad can handle the pressure, after several stalwarts retire.

it should be an even series cos even though west indies have not been that good india have still suffered from some violent innings from west indies especially in odis in the last few years!!
players like powell, gayle ganga have had field days in some matches and marlon samuels too

this indian bowling attack might suit the west indies just fine apart from bhajji

i am not saying ODI's are important in the overall situation. Till the World Cup, all your ODI performances will surely be important. In the overall scenario, tests will be important, but the World Cup is almost months away from now.

yeah, most teams find it easier to get back into rhythm/form when they play India (more famous case is Younis Khan). So India need to make sure they do not take it lightly. West Indies have players who can destroy you on their given day

I agree, and their one major problem is consistency. Yes, their players are capable of destroying India, but nothing more than capable!

the odi series shiould be easy for india unless lara plays,
tests could turn out to be draws cos both teams have good batsmen but rubbish bowling

Lara has never played against India.
He might have but he has not scored against tem, probably the only country to not to have faced his wrath.
I feel Chanderpaul will be a prominent figure in the West Indian team.

Absolutely right.
Bangladesh won an ODI against India in 2004.
India narrowly escaped defeat at the hands of Holland in the World Cup 2003.

Younis Khan, which you have cited is an excellent example.Take the case of Matthew Hayden. The 2001 tour of India transformed him.
WI have got a good stock of left-handers like Chanderpaul,Lara,Gayle and Hinds and I must point out that India have always struggled against left-handed batsmen. ;)

India cannot underestimate the Windies. Every weak team seems to have a strange knack of rattling India, especially when they play on their own soil. However, the presence of youngsters in the Indian team should help...

I read this on cricinfo; actually India has not struggled against as much against left-handers as it is conveniently believed. Rather, they have an equal success rates-in the long run- with both left and right handers. On the other hand, Australia has statistically been shown to struggle against the right-handers more than is believed.

I think Pathan can play a major role in this series, because it has been his tendency to make certain left-handers his bunnies!!! I think he will make Gayle his bunny this time!!

Gayle is very dangerous, when Pak toured in 2005 he was awesome. The only problem was that he scored well yet he didn't win his team any games, he just couldn't play the role of the finisher. India are definitely favourites because I don't see any WI bowlers tying the Indian team down.

It would have been better had it been a triangular series for India and West Indies with a team like New Zealand as third team instead of having a 5 match ODI series against the Windies. Playing the Windies in Windies is certainly not a simulation to playing the Aussies or the South Africans or the Pakistanis in the Windies (which will happen in the 2007 World Cup).

you don't need any simulation. India will be playing major teams before the WC, and there is ICC champions trophy as well. Its important to have a feel for the conditions, which is what Indians will try to do.

um, let me correct u ice man, Lara has played against India both home and away. He played em in 1994 in India and then at home in the 1997 series where he won his first test as captain by 39 runs in B'dos. Has only had a topscore of 104 in the Antigua test, but if he has found his touch which has evaded him for a while, the runs may again flow for him in the upcoming 2006 series....
