We kick off the ICC Champions Trophy 2009 with a clash between two teams that can lay claims to be the number one ODI team in the World. South Africa will start as favourites with home ground advantage. The opening pair of Gibbs and Smith will face off against the leading ODI wicket taker for the year in Kulasekara with Malinga to sling down balls at 140km/h+.

AB de Villiers, JP Duminy and Kallis form a formible middle order with the late hitting of Boucher and Morkel to follow. Their battle with the spin twins and Mathews could go a long way to deciding this match up.

Sri Lanka have found some much needed form in their batting with their massive total against India in the weekend. With arguably the best ODI opening pair in Dilshan and Jayasuriya, South Africa will want their new ball bowlers to get one if not both openers before they can unleash carnage. Lonwabo Tsotsobe should be the first change bowler especially after making quite the impression on debut against Australia with swing at good pace. Botha and Roelof van der Merwe will face a much tougher task in containing the Sri Lanka batters who are renown for their playing of spin. Kallis and Morkel cap off the bowling giving Smith at least 7 bowling options with Duminy also capable of rolling a few over.

This match shapes up as a cracker especially if Sri Lanka can bring their form from home to South Africa.

Predicated lineups:
South Africa: Herschelle Gibbs, Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis, AB De Villers, JP Duminy, Mark Boucher, Albie Morkel, Roelof van der Merwe, Parnell, Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe

Sri Lanka: Tillakaratne Dilshan , Sanath Jayasuriya, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Thilan Samaraweera, Thilina Kandamby/Chamara Kapugedera, Angelo Mathews, Nuwan Kulasekara, Lasith Malinga, Ajantha Mendis, Muttiah Muralitharan

If we win today, and if South Africa loses tomorrow- then we will retain the top spot, right? Alright then, go Lankys!

Botha not in predicted line up???
Sri Lanka have a hard hitting top order while SA's power players are in the middle-lower order for them which may be a good battle.
Result could depend on the wicket because on a spinning pitch Murali and Mendis could dominate and SL batsmen are class players of spin.

SL team with their experience and with some of their unorthodox players can be dangerous in crunch games like semi finals or final... but the first hurdle is against SA and NZ seam attack in group stages. In this match SA is the clear favorites.

I don't think this will be easy but SA will probably take it.

Sri Lanka are nowhere near being the No.1 side in the world. They`ve lost 3 series to India in Sri Lanka and also lost to England in Sri Lanka as well in the recent past. No way they can lay claims to the No.1 spot, far from it.

It will be 1 of Parnell or Tsotsobe to play. Both won't be in the starting XI. Botha and Roelof will play.

On another note Jayaruriya was pretty poor over here when he played for the Natal Dolphins not to long ago. I think the SL top order might struggle in these conditions.

Hope SL drop Mendis, he is just making them lose matches by bowling expensive spells.

Predicted lineup is wrong. Botha will definitely play in the place of tsotsobe. Parnel will definitely play, won't be dropped after his bowling in the t20 wc and has the added bonus of being a decent batsman.

Sri lanka generally have struggled in SA so I expected SA to win.
